Install a foot long pipe on the water point. Unload the heater. Now secure it to the pipe. Get some threading tape so the joints do not drip. Observe how the water flows.

When you have secured the unit to the overhead pipe, examine the power wiring. Have the manual with you just to be sure. Look up the power source and the wiring joints.

Are they in the right places? Secure the wires with clips to the wall. When conducting water heater repair, be careful so you do not damage any wires. Use a wire cover too.

Depending on your unit setup, you may have to add more connections. If the connections are correct, turn on the switch. Use the pilot lamp on the bathroom door. Turn on the water and test the device. Follow the user guide for directions for preparing medium, warm and hot water.

Fixing Gas Water Heaters

If you cannot get hot water, try the following. Take off the cover plate. The window will be visible. Set the control knob (or button) to off. Allow it to set for 30 seconds.

Afterwards, put it back on the pilot position. Push the red button. Keep snapping the igniter until you see the glow. When the glow appears, set the knob to on. This will turn on the pilot light. The igniter will also turn on and the device should work fine.

Tips and Warnings

Most water heaters are either electric or gas. The techniques for repairing these two are not the same. In the case of electric water heaters, the problems are often due to breakers. In many instances though, a simple resetting of the breakers will resolve the issue.
